Thinking Outside the Box: Using Your PhD in Creative Spaces and in Creative Ways

A modern-day renaissance man, Dr. Lovins’ work knows no bounds. He’s developed model correctional risk assessments while co-directing the University of Cincinnati’s Corrections Institute, helped Harris County CSCD implement evidence-base supervision as the Assistant Director, worked with the US State Department to provide leadership training to Prison leaders within Morocco, served on several expert committees, and is continually finding ways to go bigger and innovate more as a Principal at Justice System Partners. Dr. Brian Lovins is a Principal for Justice Systems Partner. He earned his PhD in Criminology from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently President-Elect for the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA). Prior to JSP, Dr. Lovins worked for Harris County CSCD as the Assistant Director. He was tasked with developing and implementing agency wide change plans to drive increased successful completion rates. In addition, he was the Associate Director for the University of Cincinnati’s Corrections Institute—the School of Criminal Justice’s training and research department. He has developed a state-wide juvenile risk assessment (Ohio Youth Assessment System: OYAS) and adult risk assessment (Ohio Risk Assessment System: ORAS), as well as validation of a series of post-adjudication (TRAS) and additional pretrial risk assessments.  Dr. Lovins has been invited to present to over 200 agencies and routinely trains agencies in the principles of effective intervention, risk assessment, and the delivery of cognitive-behavioral interventions.

Dr. Lovins has received the 2020 Edward J. Latessa Practitioner Research Award from the American Society of Criminology-Division on Corrections and Sentencing for his continued body of work in helping community corrections move forward. He has also been honored with the Dr. Simon Dinitz Award by the Ohio Community Corrections Association and the David Dillingham Public Service Award from the International Community Corrections Association, as well as being recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Cincinnati.  His publications include articles on risk assessment, sexual offenders, effective interventions, probation reform, and cognitive-behavioral interventions.

Zachary Drake, MA

Playing in Both Sandboxes: Staying Active in Alt Ac and Traditional Academia

Zach is proof you can do it all, and you do not have to pick sides. While working as a research scientist at Thomson Reuters, Zach also serves as an adjunct professor at two universities, is working on his doctoral dissertation at George Mason University, and works with justice leaders and agencies via his own consulting firm, Securitiv. Prior to his role at Reuters, Zach worked for two premier consulting firms. We’re excited for Zach to join us to talk about research at large for-profit consulting firms, and how he continues to stay active in both Alt-Ac and traditional academia.

Zach is a Research Scientist at Thomson Reuters Special Services. He researches a variety of security problems and develops analytical tools for federal law enforcement agencies. Prior to working at Thomson Reuters, Zach worked for two premier consulting agencies: Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (known commonly as Deloitte) as a Government and Public Sector Strategy and Analytics Consultant and Booz Allen Hamilton as a Justice, Homeland Security, and Transportation Consultant. Zach also serves as an adjunct professor at American University and George Mason University, where he is currently pursuing his PhD in Criminology, Law, and Society. His primary interest is in advanced analytics and research methodologies, spatial understandings of crime including crime and place, individual mobility, and crime prevention design.
