Call for Proposals: DCS Handbook on Prisons and Jails (Vol. 8) (Edited by Danielle Rudes, Kim Kras, TaLisa J. Carter, and Gaylene Armstrong)

Submit an abstract for the 8th edition of the Division on Corrections & Sentencing’s Handbook series. The volume, titled Handbook on Prisons & Jails, will be a comprehensive and innovative approach to examining all aspects of the carceral experience. The editors seek contributions in the form of empirical and theoretical essays that address any aspect of living and/or working within penal institutions around the world including work on lived experiences. Topics may include: trauma, risk, programs, treatment, services, mental and physical health, systemic or individual racism, discrimination, representation, disproportionality, intersectionality, positionality, LGBTQ+, aging, veterans, religion, substance use disorder, market economies, and/or any other topic relevant to those interested in prisons/jails.

Ideal contributions will consider a wide range of perspectives for understanding the experiences of persons incarcerated or working/volunteering within carceral institutions. The editors seek contributions that summarize what is known in the area as well as those that identify emerging areas for theoretical, empirical, and policy work. Contributions can include any topic or area related to carceral control, containment, living, and/or working. Traditional length chapters (8,000 to 10,000 words) and shorter essays (5,000 words) are welcomed. In addition, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodologies from advanced or junior scholars are invited and practitioner/researcher author partnerships are encouraged.
